ARMORED WARRIOR
Second half of 7th century CE
Light earthenware, slip, pigments
Cc/88
59,7 x 23,1 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi-Henan
Figure of a warrior in armor, standing with legs joined on a small quadrangular base with rounded corners. His weight is shifted to his left and he holds both arms raised forward, as if holding weapons that have been lost. The massive facial features, with large, protruding eyes, a wide mouth, and a snub nose, remind non-Chinese physical types. The armor is heavy and complete from head to toe, and is made up of plates of different sizes held together by studs and buckles. The helmet is of the tight-fitting type that covers the ears, with a button crest and a rear flap. Residues of cold pigments can be seen a little everywhere on the figurine, but especially on the front: deep pink on the face and forearms, concentrated red on the bracelets and thigh straps, traces of black on the rest of the armour. Traces of gilding are visible on the helmet.
