ARMORED WARRIOR
Second half of 7th century CE
Light earthenware, slip, pigments
Cc/92
58,7 x 23,3 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Shaanxi-Henan
Hollow figure of a warrior in armor, standing with joined legs . His weight is slightly shifted to his left and he holds both arms raised forward, as if holding weapons that have been lost: his left arm is higher and more open than his left, while the latter is in the classic position of holding a long polearm resting on the ground. The massive facial features, with large, bulging eyes, a wide mouth, and a snub nose, hark back to non-Chinese physical types. The armor he wears is heavy and complete from head to toe, and is made up of plates of different sizes held together by studs and buckles. The helmet is of the tight-fitting type that covers the ears, with a button crest and rear flap. Traces of applied pigments can be seen a little everywhere on the figurine; remains of gilding are visible on the helmet.
