ARCHER ON HORSEBACK
First half of 8th century CE
Earthenware, irregular slip, sancai glaze, pigments
Cc/26
39,7 x 37,4 cm
Funerary statuette
Provenance: Henan or Shaanxi
The statuette is painted with cold, colored pigments, with predominant shades of pinkish-brown on the pointed hood, long tunic, and quiver. The hands, closed in fists, perhaps held a perishable bridle: it's possible that the right hand held the bridle ad the left, lower down, held the bow. The sleeves of the dress, elongated and raised backwards, seem to be moved by the wind. The knight's face is white, his lips painted a bright red. The horse has a massive body and a finely shaped head. The horse's belly is hollow, as it's almost always the case with clay figurines of quadrupeds.
