AMPHORA WITH TWO HANDLES AND A GLOBULAR, FLATTENED BELLY
2nd century BCE
thin-grain, grey earthenware
Cv/58.D
32,3 x 33,6 x 29,6 x 10,5-11 cm
Vessel
Provenance: High Minjiang Region (Northern-central Sichuan)
This type of amphora is the most frequent and most successful ceramic form of the Upper Minjiang culture. The clarity of the clay and the dark grey colour are linked to the sanding and smoking processes. The vessel has a globular, flattened belly that narrows into a narrow base: this forms a flat ring around a concave central part, incised with irregular streaks. The transition to the shoulder, curved neck, and flared hem is smooth and harmonious.
