The imposing Buddha is seated in dhyanasana with his hands positioned in an esoteric form of dhyanamudra (with the two thumbs joined, the index fingers extended and the other fingers folded high). A massive square head stands on the powerful body with a hair of thick curls that also covers the voluminous ushnisha. The nose and mouth are well drawn, the eyes are half-closed in meditation. The worship of the Amitabha Buddha achieved great popularity in China and Japan with the Pure Land doctrine.
