Statue of arhat (luohan)
Provenance: Sichuan
The term luohan (arhat in Sanskrit) identifies the “saints” who have reached the goal of liberation according to Buddhist doctrine. This character sits with his left leg outstretched and his right folded over a seat that has not been preserved. The left arm is extended towards the corresponding leg, the hand folded with the fingers inwards and the palm facing down. The arhat has his gaze fixed and his mouth wide open in a curious expression between surprise and anger.
